I had a shower moment this morning. I decided to set a huge training goal and make it public. Some of the keys to obtaining goals are to 1)make it specific and 2)make it public. I’m using peer pressure to my advantage!
So here it is.
My goal is to do 1000 reinforced recalls with Gitta in the month of January 2010.
To make the math nice and round, I figure this means: 250 recalls a week (x4 weeks); which is roughly 50 recalls a day (x5 days a week). I’m planning on doing sessions of 10 which will only take about 5 minutes including setup. The location/distraction level will change each time she is successful on 8 out of 10 tries.
Anyone want to join me? Who couldn’t use a little recall work!
So that you can heckle (or encourage!) me along the way, I’m going to post a google document that tracks my progress.
Wish me Happy Training!!!
Good luck with that! Tika has always had recall issues. Nancy Gyes' advice to me was: 100 recalls a day. Let's say I'm awake and at home for 12 hours, that's one every 7 minutes! Of course I guess one could lump them.In fact, when I do that for several days with special treats (alhtough I never get near 100–probably not even 50, but not a ton less), I can start calling her even off of squirrels. But as soon as I stop doing that many, the recall goes away again. But Tika's special. I've been making an effort to do several every day recently because she had gone back to ignoring me. OK, I'm going to try for at least 20/day for the next week. We'll see how that goes.
I have been saying for a year that I need to get back to really focusing on Brit (my jrt)'s recall so I am in for 10 a day every day for the month of January!
Count me in too. The deaf and the hearing dog could use the work, and I could use the motivation! Two spaniels are signed up!
